Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Grand Forks.

Information provided by the RCMP indicates that on June 8, 2021 at approximately 9:30 p.m., police received a request to check on the wellbeing of a man at a residence in the 7500-block of 6th Street. Upon arrival, the man was reportedly observed to be sleeping and officers departed.

On June 9 at about 2:00 p.m., Emergency Health Services attended the residence, found the man unconscious and transported him to a local hospital. The man died in hospital the same evening.

The IIO will investigate to determine what role, if any, police actions or inactions may have played in the death.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
