Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Kamloops.

Information provided by the RCMP indicates that on December 19, 2020 at approximately 8:40 p.m., police received a call regarding an alleged theft in progress at a business in the 300-block of Tranquille Road. When officers arrived, they located a man reportedly in possession of a weapon and an interaction occurred. Before he was taken into custody, the man allegedly sustained injuries from the weapon he was holding.

Emergency Health Services attended and transported him to a local area hospital for treatment.

The IIO will investigate to determine what role, if any, police may have played in the injuries.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
