Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Kamloops.

Information provided by the RCMP indicates that on December 3, 2021 at approximately 7:25 p.m., police became aware of a robbery near the Lansdowne Mall. En route to the scene, officers were made aware of a theft at another business in the same mall that was possibly related to the initial call. Officers saw a male cyclist matching the description of one of the alleged suspects near the intersection of 3rd Avenue and Lansdowne Street. The cyclist reportedly fled into Riverside park and was pursued by officers.

The cyclist sustained a serious injury while being taken into custody.

The IIO was notified of the incident on the day it occurred and has commenced an investigation.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
