Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Maple Ridge that resulted in one man sustaining serious injuries.

Information provided by the RCMP states that at about 2:34pm on May 12, 2023, plainclothes police officers were conducting a joint operation to address theft and other related offenses near the Walmart in Haney Place Mall in Maple Ridge. Members located a male suspect in the parking lot and attempted to place the male under arrest. An altercation occurred between the officers and the male, whereby the suspect sustained serious injuries. The male was escorted by officers back into Walmart following the interaction before being taken into Ridge Meadows Detachment cells.

Following medical assessment, the male was subsequently transported to the local hospital for treatment.

The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred and has commenced an investigation.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
