Surrey, B.C.- The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of B.C. is investigating an incident in Nanaimo.
On May 26, 2020 at approximately 2:20 p.m., RCMP officers report responding to a call from an individual concerned about the safety and wellness of an affected person.
Officers report attending the affected person’s residence where police advised her that she was being apprehended under the Mental Health Act. A physical altercation ensued. The woman was transported to hospital. Several days later, police learned that the woman had suffered serious injuries and the IIO was notified.
The IIO is asking that any person who saw, heard or recorded the incident to contact the IIO Witness Line toll free at 1-855-446-8477.
Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
