Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Nanaimo.

Information reported by the RCMP states that at approximately 6:00 p.m. on March 29, 2022, police attempted to apprehend a woman at the Port Place Shopping Centre to return her to a residential facility. It is reported that there was an interaction as the woman was taken into custody, and she was transported to the hospital.

The RCMP became aware the woman had suffered a serious injury later that evening and notified the IIO shortly thereafter. The IIO has commenced an investigation to determine what role, if any, police actions or inactions played in the injuries.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
