Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Nanaimo.
Information reported by the RCMP states that on April 22, 2022, officers responded to a complaint regarding a man in the 400-block of Wesley Street. The man was arrested and taken to the Nanaimo detachment.
It is reported that while being lodged in cells, there was an interaction between the man and an officer.
Emergency Health Services attended and transported the man to the hospital where he was found to have sustained serious injuries.
The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred and has commenced an investigation.

Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
