Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in North Vancouver.
Information provided by the RCMP indicates that on February 1, 2021 at approximately 3:20 a.m., an officer observed a parked pickup truck that reportedly had no insurance in the 4900-block of Skyline Drive. As the vehicle was registered to a man with an outstanding warrant and he reportedly would not exit the vehicle, the Emergency Response Team was called to assist.
Several tactics were reportedly utilized in an attempt to persuade the man to exit. Just before 6:00 a.m., officers reportedly heard a gunshot from inside the vehicle. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The IIO was notified at the time of the incident and continues to investigate to determine what role, if any, police actions or inactions may have played in the death.
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
