Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is investigating the injury of one man while in the custody of the Port Alberni RCMP.
Information provided by the Port Alberni RCMP states that in two calls on April 20, 2024, police received reports that a man may be in breach of a court order and may be considering self-harm.
It is reported that police attended a residence in the 3800 block of Galiano Drive, arrested the man and took him to the local police detachment to be lodged in cells.
The man later complained of pain and was taken to the hospital where it was determined he had sustained a non-life-threatening injury.
How and when the man was injured are the subjects of the IIO investigation, as is whether police played any role.
The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred and has begun an investigation.

Background
The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
