Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Prince George.
On October 3, 2020, a man reportedly died while in custody at a Correctional Centre in the greater Prince George area following contact with members of the RCMP two days prior.
The IIO is investigating to determine what role, if any, police actions or inaction may have played in the man’s death. The BC Coroners Service is also conducting an independent investigation to determine the circumstances of his death.
Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
