Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Saanich.

Information from the Saanich Police Department states that at about 6:00 p.m. on May 31, 2022, officers responded to a report of a disturbance involving a man at a residence in the 3500-block of Richmond Road. Officers arrived shortly thereafter and spoke to the man.

About two and a half hours later, the man was taken into custody with the assistance of a police service dog and sustained a serious dog bite injury.

The man was subsequently taken to the hospital for treatment.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
