Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating a police-involved incident in Saanich.

Information from the Saanich Police Departments states that at about 12:00 p.m. on July 7, 2022, police responded to a report of a motor vehicle incident near Cook Street and Cloverdale Avenue.

It is reported that a man suffered serious, life-threatening injuries which appear to have been self-inflicted. The man was then taken into police custody before Emergency Health Services attended and transported the man to the hospital for treatment.

The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred and has commenced an investigation to determine what role, if any, police actions or inactions may have played in the incident.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
