Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Surrey.

Information provided by the RCMP indicates that on October 8, 2020 at approximately 2:11 a.m., police received a report from the public of a possible robbery in progress involving a man in the 15900-block of Fraser Highway. The caller reported to police that the man had a weapon.

When an officer arrived, the man reportedly fired shots at the police vehicle with the officer still inside. The man then allegedly turned the gun on himself and sustained gunshot injuries.

The man was transported to a local area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The IIO is investigating to determine what role, if any, the officers’ actions or inaction may have played in the man’s injuries.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
