Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Surrey where one man sustained a serious injury.

Information provided by the Surrey Police Service and Surrey RCMP states that at about 12:35 p.m. on June 11, 2024, members of both agencies attended a building in the 9000 block of 128th Street to check on the wellbeing of a man.

It is reported that, when police arrived, the man appeared to be experiencing a mental health episode and would not put down items in his possession. While taking the man into custody, police reportedly used force.

The man was then transported to a hospital for a mental health assessment. During examination and treatment, it was discovered that the man had sustained a serious but not life-threatening injury.

The IIO was notified of the incident on June 13, 2024 and initial investigative steps will seek to confirm the details of the interaction with police, as well as whether any force used was necessary, proportionate, and reasonable under the circumstances.

The IIO is asking any person with relevant information about the incident to please contact the Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
