Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Vancouver.

On June 28, 2020, the Vancouver Police Department notified the IIO of an incident that occurred earlier that day between 3:00 and 3:30 a.m. Officers were searching for a man who was involved in a prior incident and located him on a bicycle near the intersection of Dunsmuir and Howe Streets. The man rode away, and officers followed. Officers subsequently took the man into custody in the 1000-block of Robson, near the intersection of Robson and Burrard Streets. During this interaction, the man sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries.

The IIO is asking that any person who saw, heard or recorded the incident to contact the IIO Witness Line toll free at 1-855-446-8477.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
