Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Vancouver.

Information reported by the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) states that at approximately 1:00 a.m. on March 23, 2022, police report there was an interaction between a male pedestrian and officers on the Georgia Street viaduct. The man was transported to the VPD jail and was later released.

On March 25, police became aware that at some time on March 23 the man sustained serious injuries and notified the IIO.

The IIO has commenced an investigation to determine what role, if any, police actions or inactions played in the injuries.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
