Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Vancouver where one man was seriously injured.

Information from the Vancouver Police Department states that at approximately 7:40 p.m. on July 9, 2022, officers responded to a request for assistance in a residential building in the 500-block of East 8th Avenue.

When police arrived, they gained entry to the unit and spoke to a woman and started looking for the man she described. The woman reported that the man had trespassed into her home, and had assaulted and unlawfully confined her. The man was found a short time later on the ground under the fourth story balcony.

Emergency Health Services attended and transported the man to a local hospital where he was found to be suffering a serious injury.

The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred and has commenced an investigation to determine what role, if any, police actions or inactions may have played in the man’s injury.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
