Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Vancouver where one person sustained a serious harm.
Information provided by the Vancouver Police Department states that at about 5:40 p.m. on January 6, 2023, officers checked a vehicle that was reported to be stolen and was parked in the 3200-block of Riverwalk Avenue.
It is reported that a male occupant of the vehicle attempted to leave on foot. He was subsequently taken into custody following an interaction with police.
Vancouver police transported the man to a local hospital for treatment.
The IIO has commenced an investigation.

Background
The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
