Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Vancouver that resulted in the death of one man.

Information provided by the Vancouver Police Department states that at about 9:15 p.m. on June 30, 2023, a man was arrested near the intersection of Davie and Burrard streets and transported to the police jail.

It is reported that at about 10:10 p.m., the man went into medical distress while being booked into cells. Emergency Health Services transported the man to a local hospital where he was subsequently pronounced deceased.

The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred and initial investigative steps will seek to confirm the details of the arrest and the cause of the man’s medical distress and subsequent death.

Background

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
