Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Vancouver that resulted in one person suffering a serious injury.
Information provided by the Vancouver Police Department states that at approximately 6:40 p.m. on October 19, 2023, officers responded to a report of a stabbing on McGill Street near New Brighton Park.
Officers located the Affected Person and arrested them. Follow-up tests conducted at a hospital later revealed a significant injury.
The IIO was notified of the incident the same day. Initial investigative steps will seek to confirm the details of the arrest, and whether any force used during the interaction was reasonable, necessary and justified under the circumstances.

Background
The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
