IIO is Investigating an Incident in Vancouver (2025-141)
Case: 2025-141 Incident Date: June 7, 2025 Agency: Municipal Location: Vancouver Detachment: Vancouver Police Department Incident Classification: Serious Harm Case Status: Open - Investigation in ProgressSurrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is investigating an incident in Vancouver where one man was injured on June 7, 2025.
Information from the Vancouver Police Department states that around 3 a.m., officers were responding to a call at a residential building on the 700-block of East Hastings Street.
After arriving, police located a man who was reportedly in possession of a weapon. Officers then used less-lethal force to take the man into custody.
The man suffered injuries during the interaction and was taken to the hospital for assessment and treatment. He was later released.
The IIO was notified of the incident the same day it occurred and is investigating.
There are two factors that the IIO considers at the beginning of each investigation:
- If there has been an injury that meets the threshold of serious harm, as defined by the Police Act, or a death; and
- If there is a connection between the serious harm/death and police action or inaction.
If both conditions are met, a fulsome investigation will review all available evidence so the chief civilian director can determine if there are reasonable grounds to believe an offence has been committed.
Background
The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
