Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Victoria.

Information provided by the Victoria Police Department indicates that at approximately 1:25 p.m. on February 6, 2022, police received a call regarding a man in distress at a residential building in the 1900 block of Fort Street.

Officers attended and the man was found dead from injuries that appear to have been self-inflicted.

The IIO has commenced an investigation to determine what role, if any, police may have played in the death. The BC Coroners Service is also conducting an independent investigation to determine the circumstances of the death.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
