Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident on Quadra Island.

Information provided by the RCMP indicates that on July 18, 2021 at approximately 6:40 p.m., police received reports of an individual creating a disturbance in the 400-block of Spruce Place. When police arrived, the affected person reportedly was in possession of a weapon and did not comply with police direction. The Emergency Response Team attended, and the affected person was arrested with the assistance of a police service dog.

The affected person sustained a serious dog bite injury while being taken into custody. Police provided medical assistance until Emergency Health Services arrived to transport the affected person to a hospital for treatment.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
