Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Victoria.

Information provided by the Victoria Police Department indicates that in the morning on September 12, 2021, Saanich police responded to a report of a man alleged to be making threats with weapon. Officers located the man near Douglas Street and Tolmie Avenue. Victoria officers also attended the 3100-block of Douglas Street and reportedly engaged in negotiations with the male. An interaction then occurred which resulted in the man being shot by police. He was pronounced dead on scene.

The IIO was advised of the incident shortly after it occurred and has commenced an investigation into the incident.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
