IIO is Investigating Incident Involving One Man While Being Arrested by Vancouver Police (2024-046)

Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is investigating the arrest of one man by members of the Vancouver Police Department on February 29, 2024.

Information provided by the VPD states that about 9:51 p.m., officers responded to a call about a man damaging vehicles in a parking lot on the 1100 block of Alberni Street.

Officers located the affected person and there was an interaction as they attempted to arrest the man. The AP was assessed by Emergency Health Services and transported to VPD cells where he later lost consciousness.

The AP was later taken to the hospital for treatment.

The IIO was notified the next day and has now commenced an investigation.

Initial investigative steps will seek to confirm what happened leading up to and during the incident, the extent of the man’s injuries, and what role, if any, police actions or inaction may have played.
