Case: 2025-030 Incident Date: January 29, 2025 Agency: Municipal Location: Vancouver Detachment: Vancouver Police Department Incident Classification: Serious Harm Case Status: Open - Investigation in Progress

Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is investigating an arrest in Vancouver where one man sustained serious injuries.

Information provided by the Vancouver Police Department states that shortly after 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 29, officers responded to a call about an assault outside a residential building in the 2100 block of Wall Street.

Officers arrived and observed damage to the building’s lobby, reportedly caused by a man living there who had returned to his apartment unit.

When officers went to speak to the man, they reportedly found he was engaged in self harm. There was then an interaction during which officers used a form of less-lethal force to arrest him under the Mental Health Act.

The man was taken to the hospital for assessment and for treatment, including for a serious injury.

The IIO was notified of the incident the same day and has commenced an investigation. Initial investigative steps will confirm the details of the arrest and if officers’ actions were necessary, reasonable, and proportionate in the circumstances.

The IIO is asking that any witnesses and those who have video footage of the incident, to please contact the IIO at our Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
