Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating the circumstances surrounding a death in Nanaimo.

Information reported by the RCMP states that at about 11:25 a.m. on April 2, 2022, a man called 911 as he was concerned for his own well-being. When police attended his home in the area of Brackenwood Place, it is reported that the man had secured a ride and was going to the hospital.

At approximately 1:55 p.m. on April 3, the man was found deceased by means that appear to be self-inflicted.

The IIO was notified shortly thereafter and has commenced an investigation to determine what role, if any, police actions or inactions may have played in the death. The BC Coroners Service is also conducting an independent investigation to determine the circumstances of the death.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
