Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is investigating the injuries of one man following his arrest by members of the Vancouver Police Department.
Information provided by the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) states that at about 8:40 p.m. on January 4, 2025, police responded to a call regarding a man who had allegedly been in a physical altercation with another person in a home in the 500 block of Raymur Avenue.
When police arrived, the man had isolated himself in one room and was threatening to harm himself with a weapon. Police took the man into custody, and during that interaction, he sustained injuries. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred and has commenced an investigation. Initial investigative steps confirm that the man’s injuries meet the threshold of serious harm, as defined by the Police Act.
The IIO investigation into whether police actions were necessary, reasonable and proportionate in the circumstances, continues.
