Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating the death of one man in Surrey.

Information provided by the RCMP states that at about 7:30 p.m. on July 7, 2023, police received reports of a man and woman walking in traffic in the 19300-block of Fraser Highway.

When officers arrived, it is reported that they took the man into custody, and he went into medical distress shortly thereafter. Despite medical assistance from police, fire services, and Emergency Health Services, the man was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene.

The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred and initial investigative steps will seek to confirm the details of the incident, and the cause of the man’s medical distress and subsequent death.

Background

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
