Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is investigating the circumstances around a motor vehicle incident that occurred in Surrey earlier this (Monday) morning and resulted in injuries to two people.

Preliminary information provided by the Surrey Police Service (SPS) indicates that at approximately 3:00 a.m. on September 7, 2026, SPS officers attempted to stop a black Chevrolet Avalanche pickup truck near the intersection of King George Boulevard and 96 Avenue. A collision involving the pickup truck and a police vehicle subsequently occurred.

The driver failed to stop. A short time later, the pickup truck was involved in a collision with a concrete SkyTrain barrier on King George Boulevard at Holland Commons, resulting in injuries to the driver. A pedestrian was also located at the scene with serious injuries.

Both the pedestrian and the driver were transported to hospital for assessment and treatment.

The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred and has commenced an investigation.

Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed any part of the incident, or who may have video – including dash camera footage – to contact the IIO by phone or email.

There are two factors that the IIO considers at the beginning of each investigation:

  1. If there has been an injury that meets the threshold of serious harm, as defined by the Police Act, or a death; and
  2. If there is a connection between the serious harm/death and officer action or inaction.

If both conditions are met, the investigation will continue to examine all available evidence to determine what occurred. At the conclusion of the investigation, the chief civilian director will consider whether there are reasonable grounds to believe that an offence may have occurred.

Background
