IIO Is Seeking Witnesses to an Incident in Duncan Where One Woman was Injured (2024-279)

Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is investigating an incident in Duncan where one woman sustained an injury.

Information provided by the RCMP states that at about 2:05 p.m. yesterday (November 29, 2024), officers responded to reports from the public about a woman waving a weapon at vehicles near the intersection of Underwood and Craig streets.

Officers located the woman near the river off of Allenby Road, and there was an interaction between the woman and police while she was being taken into custody. The woman sustained a serious injury and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The IIO was notified the same day and has commenced an investigation.

Initial investigative steps will seek to confirm the extent of the woman’s injury and if it meets the threshold of serious harm as defined by the Police Act, and if any force used by police during the arrest was necessary, reasonable, and proportionate under the circumstances.
