Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is seeking witnesses to an incident in Maple Ridge.

Information provided by the RCMP on October 31, 2020 indicates that on the previous day (October 30) at approximately 10:30 p.m., police received a report of a woman exhibiting concerning behaviour near the intersection of Lougheed Highway and 226 Street. An officer attended and spoke to the woman and a man with her. As the woman reportedly had no overt signs of injury, the officer departed without further action.

On October 31 at about 2:00 a.m., police were advised of a woman in serious condition at a local hospital who was subsequently identified as the same woman an officer saw the previous evening.

The IIO will investigate to determine what role, if any, police actions or inaction played in the woman’s condition.

The IIO would like to speak to the individual who reported the woman’s behaviour to an officer in front of the Ridge Meadows detachment, and any other people who saw, heard or recorded the incident. Please contact the IIO Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website if you have any information.
