For Immediate Release
Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is seeking witnesses to an incident overnight in Maple Ridge where three people have died.
Information provided by the RCMP states that at 6:40 p.m. yesterday (July 23, 2025), officers responded to a dispute near the intersection of 118A Avenue and 239 Street. They spoke to the people involved before leaving a short time later.
Later in the evening, just before 11:00 p.m., police responded to a call from a person who reported that a vehicle was on fire and they had heard gunshots. The location was the same as attended earlier in the evening.
When police arrived, they report finding two people deceased and were told a third person was inside a home and armed with a weapon. Officers then set up to contain the area.
At about 2:10 a.m., a man was found deceased inside the home from what appears to be a self-inflicted injury.
The IIO was notified about the incident shortly after it occurred and is now investigating.
There are two factors that the IIO considers at the beginning of each investigation:
- If there has been an injury that meets the threshold of serious harm, as defined by the Police Act, or a death; and
- If there is a connection between the serious harm/death and police action or inaction.
If both conditions are met, the investigation will continue to examine all available evidence to determine what occurred. At the conclusion of the investigation, the chief civilian director will consider whether there are reasonable grounds to believe that an offence may have occurred.
The IIO is asking that any witnesses that have not already provided a statement, or who have video footage of the incident, to please contact the IIO at our Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
