For Immediate Release
Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is seeking witnesses to an April 2025 arrest in Nanaimo where one man was injured.
Information provided by the RCMP states that at about 12:40 p.m. on April 20, 2025, officers with the Nanaimo RCMP arrested a man near his home in the Sherwood Forest area.
There was an interaction between the man and police during the arrest, and the man sustained an injury that appears to have been self-inflicted while being taken into custody. He was taken to a hospital for treatment and has survived his injury.
The IIO was notified about the incident shortly after it occurred and is now investigating.
The IIO investigation to date has confirmed that the man’s injury meets the threshold of serious harm, as defined by the Police Act. The investigation continues to examine any connection between that serious harm and police action/inaction. At the conclusion of the investigation, the chief civilian director will consider whether there are reasonable grounds to believe that an offence may have occurred.
The IIO is asking that any witnesses that have not already provided a statement, or who have video footage of the incident, to please contact the IIO at our Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
