Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is seeking witnesses to the arrest of one man in Vancouver last week.

At about 10:25 p.m. on October 8, 2024, police located a man driving an F350 pickup truck that was believed to have been stolen.

Police vehicles were used to stop the F350 near the intersection of Renfrew and E Hastings streets. Officers subsequently moved to arrest the man driving the vehicle. There was an interaction, and the man was taken into custody. The man sustained injuries during the interaction with police and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The IIO asks that any witness who observed the arrest and has not yet spoke to an IIO investigator to please call 1-855-446-8477.

Initial investigative steps have confirmed that the man’s injuries meet the serious harm threshold, as defined by the Police Act. The IIO investigation continues and will determine whether any force used during the arrest was necessary, proportionate, and reasonable under the circumstances.

The IIO is asking any person with video footage or relevant information about the incident to please contact the Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
