Surrey – The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has been notified of an officer-involved incident in Chilliwack.

The RCMP and Abbotsford Police reported that on March 02, 2020, just after 10p.m., officers from both agencies attempted to locate a male wanted on several warrants in an apartment block on Mary Street, Chilliwack.

Officers reported the male fled and while attempting to arrest the male a police service dog was deployed. Officers then used a less lethal weapon before taking the male into custody.

The male was transported to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The IIO has commenced an investigation to determine what role, if any, the officers’ actions or inaction may have played into the serious harm of the male.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
