Surrey – The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has received notification of a police-involved incident in Port Hardy.
The RCMP reported that on January 15, 2019, officers attended a residence pertaining to an intoxicated male causing a disturbance. Shortly afterwards, the male was arrested for breach of the peace and escorted to cells at the Port Hardy RCMP detachment.
According to police, the male complained of an injury. On release, officers offered to take the male to hospital, but he requested to be taken home. The male later chose to attend hospital where it was confirmed he had an injury and the RCMP notified the IIO.
The IIO will investigate the incident as it appears the male may have suffered serious harm during an interaction with officers.

Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
