Surrey. B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has been notified of a police-involved incident in Richmond.

RCMP reported that on October 7, 2019 at approximately 12:00 p.m., police reported that an individual got into a police vehicle and drove away.

The man driving the stolen police vehicle collided with a civilian vehicle and an unmarked police vehicle near Gilbert Road and Donald Road in Richmond. The driver proceeded to collide with a second civilian vehicle in the 8200-block of Gilbert Road, and caused the female driver of that vehicle to suffer serious injuries.

The IIO has commenced an investigation to determine what role, if any, the officers’ actions or inaction may have played into the serious harm of the female.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
