For Immediate Release

Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of B.C. has been notified of an incident in Saanich.

Saanich Police notified the IIO regarding an incident that resulted in the death of a male on April 7, 2019. It was reported that police had contact with the male on April 6, 2019. The male was hospitalized overnight for matters unrelated to his interactions with police. There was no further police involvement after that time, nor after the male was released from hospital on April 7.

The IIO is required by the Police Act to investigate incidents where the actions or inactions of a police officer may have resulted in the serious harm or death of any person. In this case the actions that led to the death of the male were clearly not related to any interaction with police from the previous day.

Therefore, after a review of the information, the Chief Civilian Director has determined that any investigation of the actions of police will be discontinued.

The investigation will be continued by the BC Coroners Service.

Background:

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
