Surrey – The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has received notification of a police-involved incident in Vancouver.
Vancouver Police reported that on January 04, 2019, officers attended a residence following a call regarding a disturbance between two males. One male was arrested for breach of the peace. It was reported that as the male was being taken away, he tried to evade officers and a foot pursuit ensued. During the process of his apprehension, there was reported contact with a fence post by the male.
On route to cells, the male complained of chest pains. Emergency Health Services was requested, and the male was transported to hospital.
The IIO will investigate the incident as it appears the male may have suffered serious harm as a result of an interaction with officers.
Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
