IIO Provides Update into November 2025 Fatal Police-Involved Shooting in Sechelt (2025-257)

Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is providing an update into the investigation of a November 2025 police-involved shooting in Sechelt (IIO 2025-257).

At about 3:30 a.m. on November 1, members of the Sunshine Coast RCMP responded to a call reporting that a man was in crisis and in possessions of weapons in the Porpoise Bay area.

Police located the man, who then entered a residence. They also learned that four other people were inside the home with the man.

Officers entered the home just before 4:30 a.m. and three of the occupants were safely removed from the residence.

During the interaction that followed, shots were fired by police at approximately 10:30 a.m. The IIO subsequently confirmed the fourth person had been located safely.

The man who was the subject of the call to police sustained gunshot related injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. He was subsequently pronounced deceased.

The IIO was notified of the shooting and commenced an investigation.

So far, the IIO has conducted multiple interviews with police and civilian witnesses. Investigators have also carried out forensic examinations and are in the process of reviewing further evidence, including medical reports.

They are also in the process of conducting further interviews.

The IIO investigation into the incident continues.

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of officers and detention guards in British Columbia. It investigates all incidents involving officers or detention guards that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
