IIO Provides Update Regarding July Officer-Involved Shooting in Surrey (2026-156)

Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is providing an update on its investigation into an officer-involved shooting that occurred in Surrey on July 8, 2026 (IIO 2026-156).

Officers with the RCMP’s Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit responded to a report that a distressed man had left a residence in the 14100-block of Melrose Drive with an edged weapon.

At approximately 8:02 p.m., the man was located by police near 111A Avenue and Wallace Drive. There was then an interaction which resulted in a Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW) deployment and shots being fired by police.

The man sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital for assessment and treatment.

The man has since been released from the hospital and continues to recover.

The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred and commenced an investigation.

To date, the IIO has canvassed for witnesses, collected evidence – including video footage – and conducted interviews.

Investigators have also received records and some specialized reports but are continuing to wait on others.

Analysis of forensic reports and other digital evidence remains ongoing. The investigation continues.
