Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has now completed its investigation into the injury of a man while being arrested in Abbotsford (IIO 2024-297).

At about 8:10 p.m. on December 26, 2024, officers with the Abbotsford Police Department responded to calls regarding an alleged domestic dispute involving a man and woman. A caller said that the man and woman had gone into an apartment building located in the 2000 block of Eleanor Avenue, and it was learned a short time later that they had gone to separate units.

The man attempted to leave when police tried to speak to him, and he was arrested. The man sustained a serious but not life-threatening injury while being taken into custody.

The chief civilian director has now reviewed the evidence – including witness statements, medical evidence, video recordings, and police records – and determined that there are no reasonable grounds to believe that any officer may have committed an offence.

The IIO investigation is now concluded. Due to concurrent court proceedings, the IIO’s public report will not be released on the IIO’s website until that process has concluded.

Background

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
