Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has now completed its investigation into a police-involved shooting incident in the Tsay Keh Dene First Nation (IIO 2024-082).

On the evening of April 9, 2024, police responded to a call of shots fired at a residence in the Tsay Keh Dene First Nation located about 560 kilometres north of Prince George.

When police arrived, they located a man with a weapon who entered another nearby residence.

The Emergency Response Team attended early in the morning on April 10, 2024. The man subsequently exited the residence while in possession of a weapon. Shots were fired by police, and the man sustained gunshot-related injuries.

The man was transported to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it happened and began an investigation to determine whether the force used was necessary, proportionate, and justified under the circumstances.

The Chief Civilian Director has reviewed the evidence – including scene and firearm examinations, medical information, and police records – and determined that there are no reasonable grounds to believe any officer may have committed an offence.

The IIO investigation is now concluded, and a public report will be published following conclusion of a related court process into the actions of the affected person.

Background

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
