For Immediate Release
Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has now completed its investigation into the death of one person and injury of another in a collision in Langley (IIO 2024-064).
In the early morning on March 18, 2024, a police officer saw a black Mazda driving east on 16 Avenue in Langley and attempted to conduct a traffic stop.
The Mazda did not stop and was involved in a collision at the intersection of 16 Avenue and 264 Street. Both of the Mazda’s occupants were injured and taken to a hospital for treatment. The passenger, a man, died of his injuries on March 19, while the driver, a woman, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The Chief Civilian Director has reviewed the evidence – including statements of civilian witnesses, medical records, scene analysis, and police reports – and determined that there are no reasonable grounds to believe the officer may have committed an offence. This matter is therefore not being referred to the BC Prosecution Service for consideration of charges.
The IIO investigation is now concluded.
Due to concurrent police investigation related to the collision, the IIO’s public report will not be released on the IIO’s website until that process has concluded.
Background
The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
