Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has now completed its investigation into a police-involved shooting incident in Surrey where one man sustained serious injuries (IIO 2024-063).
In the evening on March 17, 2024, members of the Surrey Police Service received a complaint regarding a man reported to be in possession of a weapon.
When officers located the man, an interaction followed which resulted in one officer discharging their firearm. The man sustained serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
The Chief Civilian Director has reviewed the evidence – including statements of civilian witnesses, video footage, medical records, scene analysis, and police reports – and determined that there are no reasonable grounds to believe any officer may have committed an offence. This matter is therefore not being referred to the BC Prosecution Service for consideration of charges.
The IIO investigation is now concluded.
Due to concurrent police investigation related to the incident, the IIO’s public report will not be released on the IIO’s website until that process has concluded.
Background
