Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has concluded investigation 2022-114 into an officer-involved shooting incident where one man sustained an injury.

At about 9:00 p.m. on May 20, 2022, police responded to a call reporting that there was a man with a weapon in the 3400-block of Highway 5. When officers arrived, there was an interaction and shots were fired by police.

The man sustained a gunshot-related injury and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

On behalf of the Chief Civilian Director, the IIO’s General Counsel has reviewed the evidence – including forensic scene analysis, video footage, medical records, and police information – and determined that there are no reasonable grounds to believe any officer may have committed an offence.

Due to concurrent police investigation related to the incident, the IIO’s public report will not be released on the IIO website until that process has concluded.

The IIO investigation is now concluded.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
