IIO Seeking Witnesses to a June 2025 Motor Vehicle Incident in Langley (2026-058)

Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is seeking witnesses to a motor vehicle incident that occurred on June 1, 2025 in Langley.

Shortly before 2:30 a.m., a Langley RCMP officer driving a marked police vehicle was travelling eastbound on Fraser Highway. The vehicle was then involved in a collision at the intersection of Fraser Highway and 260 Street with a white 2023 Hyundai Elantra.

The police officer, passenger and driver of the Elantra were assessed by paramedics at the scene. They all then went to a hospital for precautionary reasons and further assessment.

The incident was initially investigated by the Langley RCMP. Upon further review of medical evidence, it was reported to the IIO on March 12, 2026.

The IIO has now determined the injuries suffered by the driver of the Elantra meet the threshold of serious harm, as defined by the Police Act. An investigation is now underway.

There are two factors that the IIO considers at the beginning of each investigation:

  1. If there has been an injury that meets the threshold of serious harm, as defined by the Police Act, or a death; and
  2. If there is a connection between the serious harm/death and officer action or inaction.

If both conditions are met, the investigation will continue to examine all available evidence to determine what occurred. At the conclusion of the investigation, the chief civilian director will consider whether there are reasonable grounds to believe that an offence may have occurred.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of officers and detention guards in British Columbia. It investigates all incidents involving officers or detention guards that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
