Surrey – The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. is seeking witnesses to an arrest in Surrey.

RCMP reported that on January 18, 2020, at approximately 1:00 a.m., officers attended to the complaint of an agitated male at the McDonald’s parking lot on 152nd Street and 18th Ave, South Surrey.

The male was placed under arrest for causing a disturbance and taken into custody. Once in cells, the male complained of pain and was transported to hospital where it was determined the male had a serious injury.

The IIO was notified later that day and made initial inquiries to confirm that the injury met the definition of serious harm before informing the public. The investigation will now focus on determining what role, if any, the officers’ actions may have played into the serious harm of the male.

 Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
