For Immediate Release

SURREY – The Independent Investigations Office of BC confirms it has sustained jurisdiction in an incident that took place earlier this month.

According to Prince George RCMP, at approximately 11 pm on December 8, 2014, officers were dealing with three individuals near 3rd Avenue and Dominion Street, when it was determined that an adult male had outstanding warrants. As the officers were taking the male into custody, he sustained what appeared to be a self-inflicted injury to his neck. During the incident an officer was also stabbed.

After conducting a preliminary investigation, the IIO has sustained jurisdiction and is in the community conducting investigative tasks.

The IIO has information that suggests there were witnesses in the area at the time of the incident and that video recordings or still photographs may have been taken. Anyone with information is asked to contact the IIO at 778-988-1041 as it is crucial that investigators speak with potential witnesses.

The RCMP and the IIO will work as per the MOU signed by the Chief Civilian Director and BC Police agencies. The RCMP maintain full jurisdiction over any investigation into the actions of the affected person.
